Now, on the eve of the organization’s 50th anniversary season, the show that changed Broadway forever is coming back to Bryan-College Station as part of its 25th Anniversary Tour on February 16 and 17, 2022 (7:30 PM). Tickets are on sale now at the MSC Box Office (979-845-1234) and online at www.MSCOPAS.org. Ticket prices range from $30-$90 with special ticket prices for students.

For a quarter of a century, Jonathan Larson’s RENT has inspired us to choose love over fear and to live without regret. This Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning phenomenon follows a year in the lives of a diverse group of artists and friends struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. It has become more than a musical – it’s a cultural touchstone, a rite of passage and a source of joy and strength for millions. RENT has become a part of us forever.

OPAS Executive Director Anne Black states, “It’s hard to believe it’s been a little over 25 years since Jonathan Larson’s remarkable RENT opened on Broadway. This piece is as timely today as when it premiered in 1996.” Black continues, “When it was last here in 2002, it sold out primarily because students couldn’t wait to see it. For these February performances, we look forward to welcoming some of those ‘RENTheads’ back to Rudder as well as introducing the award-winning musical to new audiences.”

Tours of RENT have crisscrossed the country almost continuously since 1996, with the latest tour alone playing 5 countries, 237 cities, and 1,005 performances. RENT received its world premiere off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on February 13, 1996 to ecstatic reviews and transferred to Broadway on April 29, 1996. RENT won the 1996 Tony Award® for Best Musical as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The musical has been translated into every major language and has been performed in 27 countries across six continents.

Based on original direction by Michael Greif (Tony and Drama Desk Nominations, RENT), Evan Ensign re-stages the 25th Anniversary Tour. Original Broadway creatives Marlies Yearby (Choreography) and Angela Wendt (Costume Design) are joined by Jonathan Spencer (Lighting Design), Keith Caggiano (Sound Design), Dave Pepin (Music Supervisor), Owen Johnston (Associate Choreographer), and Matthew E. Maraffi (adapting original scenic design by Paul Clay) to make up the creative team for the tour. Casting for the tour is by Wojcik | Seay Casting.

Whether you’ve never seen RENT or have completely lost count, you can’t miss it this time around – the 25th Anniversary “Farewell Season of Love” is your FINAL CHANCE to experience this celebrated touring production.

The RENT 25th Anniversary Farewell Tour is produced by Work Light Productions, whose other touring productions this season include the 2016 Olivier Award-winning production of Jesus Christ Superstar, a new production of An Officer and a Gentleman, and the First National tour of Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations.

We are humbled that over five million audience members worldwide have been entertained by our celebration of Carole’s story and her timeless music.”

With a book by Tony® and Academy® Award-nominee Douglas McGrath, direction by Marc Bruni and choreography by Josh Prince, Beautiful features a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil.  On October 27, 2019, the Broadway production of Beautiful – The Carole King Musical ended its smash-hit, record-breaking run after nearly six years. By the time the production took its final bow, it played 60 preview and 2,418 regular performances, surpassing the original production of Annie and the landmark 1998 revival of Cabaret to become the 27th longest-running musical (and the second longest running “bio-musical”) in Broadway history. On Broadway, the show was seen by almost 2,200,000 audience members (including, quite famously, King herself) and is the longest-running and highest-grossing show in the history of the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

The Original Broadway Cast Recording of Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (Ghostlight Records) won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and is available on CD, digitally, and on vinyl.

Sony Pictures has announced that the film adaptation of Beautiful will be produced by Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Paul Blake.

Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.  Beautiful features a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, including “I Feel The Earth Move,” “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got A Friend” and the title song.

The creative team of Beautiful also includes Derek McLane (Set Design), Alejo Vietti (Costume Design), Peter Kaczorowski (Lighting Design), Brian Ronan (Sound Design), Charles G. LaPointe (Wig and Hair Design), Steve Sidwell (Orchestrations and Music Arrangements), Jason Howland (Music Supervision) and John Miller (Music Coordination).

ABOUT ROALD DAHL AND HIS LEGACY

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was a spy, ace fighter-pilot, chocolate historian and medical inventor. He was also the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG and many more brilliant stories. He remains the World’s No.1 storyteller.

Sitting in a hut at the bottom of his garden, surrounded by odd bits and pieces such as a suitcase (used as a footrest), his own hipbone (which he’d had replaced) and a heavy ball of metal foil (made from years’ worth of chocolate wrappers), he went on to write some of the world’s best-loved children’s stories. His first children’s story, James and the Giant Peach, was published in 1961, was a hit and every subsequent book became a best-seller.

Today, his stories are available in 58 languages and, by a conservative estimate, he has sold more than 250 million books. Many of these stories have also been adapted for stage and screen, including the 1971 film classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Wes Anderson’s acclaimed Fantastic Mr Fox, the multi-award winning Matilda The Musical from the RSC with music by Tim Minchin, and Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster The BFG. The latest adaptation is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical which opened on Broadway in April 2017 following three Golden years on London’s West End.

OPAS Announces Five Musicals For 2021-2022 Season

Line-up includes new dates for Season 47 cancellations of Beautiful, Fiddler on the Roof, and RENT plus, new musicals An Officer and a Gentleman and Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

COLLEGE STATION, TX: OPAS is pleased to announce that Broadway is heading back to Rudder Auditorium with five big musicals scheduled for the “Let’s Get Together” 2021-2022 season. After what will have been nearly two years without a Broadway national tour performance at Texas A&M University, blockbuster musicals get back to a sweet start with the family-friendly Broadway smash Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (November 9-10 • Sponsored by Blue Bell).

The new year brings even more Broadway programs. In 2022, OPAS welcomes Beautiful – The Carole King Musical (February 4-5 • Sponsored by Aggieland Credit Union), the 25th Anniversary Tour of RENT (February 16-17), an all-new musical based on the hit film An Officer and A Gentleman (March 8-9) and Fiddler on the Roof (March 28-29 • Sponsored by Brookshire Brothers).

In addition to the Broadway line-up, OPAS is also announcing a performance on the Intimate Gatherings series (sponsored by Comfort Keepers). The newly added program to that series, performed in Rudder Theatre, is a one-night-only concert by The Queen’s Cartoonists on March 24. Hailing from Queens, New York, The Queen’s Cartoonists is comprised of six world-class musicians performing a concert filled with music from classic cartoons and contemporary animation – synchronized to video projections of the original films!

OPAS Executive Director Anne Black explains, “In the spring of 2020, the pandemic hit just before our three big musicals were to be in Rudder as part of the “Tapestry” season – Beautiful, Fiddler on the Roof and RENT. The buzz centered around those musicals was positively palpable. So, we are thrilled these three musicals are back on the schedule.” She continues, “But that’s not all. After more than a year of no Broadway shows, three musicals just aren’t enough. That’s why we also have two new musicals on the season, both based on films, An Officer and a Gentleman and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

The MSC Box Office will begin taking ticket orders for season ticket packages and single tickets on Monday, September 20 at 9 AM (979-845-1234 • boxoffice.tamu.edu). Packages include a build-your-own Broadway four-pack starting as low as $110.

Tickets to the previously announced concerts by Michael Cavanaugh, J. Robert Spencer (7000 Miles to Broadway), The Kingdom Choir and The Barricade Boys are already on sale at the box office. For more information about all OPAS performances and ticket options, please visit www.MSCOPAS.org. Black summarizes, “Now more than ever, ticket purchases and donations help ensure the future of OPAS. And remember, this is our 49th season. Wait until you see what we have in store for the upcoming 50th anniversary season of OPAS!”
